Squaw Valley Academy Alumni Success Stories

Squaw Valley Academy can be an ideal college-preparatory school for the student needing structure, support, and challenge.

The following true stories show academic, professional, and personal accomplishments of SVA alumni. Please contact the Academy to help locate a reference, parent, or alumnus/a in your area who may have had a need similar to yours.

A two-year SVA grad from San Francisco was accepted to Berkeley and Dartmouth, both of which he turned down to attend Middlebury College which had "a better ski team." That boy had choices!

A local Lake Tahoe boy leaves a tenth grade public school with three Fs and spends two years at SVA. After graduating, he is awarded a full, four-year scholarship to Colorado University at Boulder, where he skis top-level NCAA, and graduates with a degree in Architecture.

The son of a college professor is diagnosed with clinical dyslexia, and his father complains that SVA is not structured to assist. The boy is no angel, but he does his work, albeit slowly, with extra time on some tests. The boy goes on to a Northwest college and graduates with a Communications degree. Father and son come up to ski at Christmas and, out of gratitude, dad offers $25,000 to the school building fund.

A Norwegian boy is not happy in his mid-west home-stay exchange program in a public school, and transfers to SVA. He loves SVA and the ski mountain, and goes on to graduate from a US college. The boy returns to Norway and, with a childhood friend, founds a successful export business in boutique bottled water.

A girl has a terrible 9th grade year at a California Central Coast High School and subsequently spends two years at SVA.  She returns to her old school for senior year and to graduate. She earns high honors, and "Most Improved." Her teachers were reported to have asked her, "WHERE have you been?"

A girl takes 1.5 years of chemistry at SVA during her 3.5 years here and enters UC Davis. She joins a sorority and earns the highest GPA of all freshman sorority women in her academic division.

A boy is a Lake Tahoe day student at SVA and starts rather poorly in his grades and attitude. But after 2-3 years he is doing good academic work. After graduating from SVA, he joins the Air National Guard while in college. He graduates college and is selected for US Air Force training in Texas. He graduates from fighter pilot school and now ‘drives’ a very large 747. His parents claimed that their son would not have gotten onto that path without SVA's emphasis on math and science.

A high school student from Los Angeles transferred to Squaw Valley Academy for his senior year. His grades had been quite low for three years, despite being a socially popular student. During his year at the Academy, his grades improved due to hard work and commitment and strong academic and personal guidance from Academy faculty. His sense of accomplishment and self-esteem rose and was heightened upon joining the Squaw Valley USA Ski Team. He was admitted to both the University of Southern California and Colorado University at Boulder.

A high school student enrolled at Squaw Valley Academy for her senior year trained and competed for Squaw Valley USA, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. During her year at the Academy, she won third place in an international competition at Val d'Isere, France. She also received a year's college credit when she entered Stanford University for the Advanced Placement Calculus Course that she completed at Squaw Valley Academy.
