Our Structure at Squaw Valley Academy
Squaw Valley Academy is a California 8th-12th grade boarding school and day school founded in 1978 to offer a combination of college preparatory learning, outdoor education, and sports opportunities in the scenic High Sierra at Lake Tahoe. SVA offers strong preparation for college as its central focus and many outdoor sports and activities as a catalyst for personal growth and achievement.
The SVA curriculum prepares students for the University of California system by providing classes approved by UC Berkeley. Each SVA graduate earns 240 credits and achieves college acceptance into an average of three colleges or universities. Students may receive dual high school and college credit recognized by the California State University and University of California schools by participating in the Academic Enrichment program at a local community college.
We are strictly college-preparatory, yet we readily accept students who need an academic second chance. With an average of eight to twelve students per class, SVA is ideal for students who need the individual attention provided by small class size, study halls, and experienced teachers. We have two-hour evening study halls each school night supervised by one or more teachers.
We foster strong community by providing mountain-oriented, life-long sports such as snowboarding, skiing, river and sea kayaking, mountain biking, ice skating, rock climbing, fly fishing, and camping. Boys and girls soccer teams lead an exciting fall season each year. We sponsor many trips within California, including Sacramento and San Francisco. Our summer school combines academic credit with summer activities and adventures at and around Lake Tahoe.
During the winter semester, students may ski and snowboard daily if their school work is current. The Academy is located near the base of Squaw Valley USA, a ski and snowboard resort with thirty-two ski lifts and site of the 1960 Winter Olympics.
